The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
