The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
