The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book in the coming weeks called A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his time spent behind bars.

The announcement came less than two weeks following the ex-leader left prison while his appeal proceeds his conviction related to criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire political financing from the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in an extract, suggesting the account centers around his reflections from isolation as opposed to extensive analysis on the packed and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, not present at the prison, where one hears a lot to hear,” he adds. “The din is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader had appeared remotely from a room in prison, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, easing this difficult experience tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, deeply straining. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Reading Material

It remains unclear did he manage to read and critique the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned then breaks out to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was held in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail located in the capital. Security personnel stayed in the next cell.

It was stated that he had eaten only yoghurts while inside because he feared any food could have been tampered with. Although he had access to prepare his own meals yet he declined, as per accounts. It is uncertain if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Defense Viewpoint

The legal representative, who visited his client each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better released rather than in custody. “He has faced menacing messages, listened to yells after dark and emergency responses next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison last month after the judiciary sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, with a new trial is scheduled for next spring.
