Michael Jordan Tells Court He Felt No Fear of the Racing Body in Antitrust Trial
The basketball icon, introducing himself formally in a Charlotte court on Friday, stated that his competitive side and status as a newcomer motivated his push for 23XI Racing to confront Nascar over perceived violations of competition laws.
Financial Stakes and a Competitive Drive
The owner disclosed financial and corporate details of his 23XI team, revealing he invested $40m of his own funds into the Cup Series operation co-founded with business partner Curtis Polk and longtime driver Denny Hamlin.
“It fell to someone to act,” Jordan stated in the Charlotte courtroom. “I was a new person, I wasn’t afraid. I believed I could take on Nascar in its entirety. From my perspective, the sport required examination through a new lens.”
Central Issue: Charter Agreements and Renewal Demands
The heart of the case involves the end of a 2016 agreement where Nascar provided each team a franchise. This system mirrors other major leagues with independent franchises, such as the NBA’s Hornets or the Carolina Panthers. This deal was due to end in 2024 when Nascar insisted on charter membership renewals.
