Liverpool's Manager Provides No Excuses and Pledges to Plot Way Out of Malaise

Liverpool's head coach declared he needed to “examine my own performance” following the Reds suffered a 6th loss in seven Premier League matches at home against Forest and affirmed he would find a solution from the title holders' poor run.

Forest, fighting against the drop prior to the match, delivered the largest win at Liverpool's stadium in their history as the Merseyside club slipped to an 8th loss in 11 fixtures in every tournament. The most expensive domestic acquisition, Alexander Isak, was once more anonymous and Liverpool contended the defender's opener should have been ruled out for comparable grounds to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed effort against City before the international break. But Slot conceded the buck stopped with him and offered no alibis.

“Nobody wishes to listen to me now speaking about refereeing decisions if you lose 3-0 at home to Forest,” stated the Liverpool head coach. “I should look at myself first and my team, but it does show you how a score can change the flow of a match. Earlier I was just waiting for us to score a goal. Afterwards we barely generated anything.

“Naturally there is a path forward, particularly with the quality footballers we have. No matter if you triumph or are beaten when you look back you are always thinking: ‘Where can we improve, in what aspects can we adjust?’ but that is something else from doubting yourself.

“I want to stress I am responsible for the current defeats. You are answerable when you are victorious but also liable when you are defeated. I can never come up with enough excuses for us to have the results we have. That is not good enough and I am responsible for that.”

The team's performance fell apart as Slot introduced multiple attacking changes when pursuing the game. “It was the same on the road at Forest the previous campaign,” he remarked. “I took the French defender out and brought on [Diogo] Jota and he scored straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was brave, currently it’s probably unwise.”

Liverpool previously were defeated in two successive at Anfield league games by Nottingham Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they lost back-to-back top-flight games by a 3-0 margin was in the mid-60s.

Slot said: “It was extremely poor. Playing on home soil, losing 3-0 no matter which opponent you encounter is a terrible result. Unexpected if you look at the first half-hour of the match. I haven’t seen us creating so many chances in the opening half-hour perhaps the whole campaign, and the initial occasion they arrived in our penalty area they found the back of the net.

“It wasn’t at City, but in every other fixture we have been the dominant team and were capable to create opportunities. Recently it is almost consistently that we miss our opportunities and the ones we allow find the net.”
