Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
