Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
People have come together throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the agreement.
A senior delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to close the differences between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for assistance distribution
- Future administration of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to heal," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to end in as payment for the release of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"When the dusk falls, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated two more dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south region, medical staff said.
