The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
